  • Motivate Your Audience to Buy Your Title!

    Packaging Sells! Your title is phenomenal. Your content is great. But what is the decision to buy based on? Unfortunately, it is not always substance. The look of your title - whether you are selling these at conferences, shows, on line, or retail via bookstore - is what reflects the substance. You have to reach your audience; motivate them to buy.

     
  • Printing & Packaging - Choose it to Reach Your Audience

    Who is your audience? What motivates them? What reflects your title?
    Here are a few suggestions based on what other people in the industry have done:

    Audience = Alternative or Spiritual?
    Choose Eco friendly and Earth conscious decisions in your printed packaging. Recycled Paper (70-80% recycled stock, 80% post consumer waste), Unbleached fiberboard, FSC certified paper from responsible printers, soy inks, limited use of plastic or non-plastic options, non toxic shrinkwrap....not just eco jargon, but substance. Make your actions reflect your opinions because if you don't, they won't.

    Audience = Educational, Curriculum, Lectures, Classes?
    Choose quality packaging that matches the quality of what they are buying. If you are selling your curriculum set at $250, your customers expect to see something of value with their eyes, and feel it with their hands. Flimsy packaging made to cut costs, won't do it. You need solid paper stock with a good lamination that fingers feel. If you are selling a tile at $39.50, you can expect to put several dollars per unit into the manufacturing of the title. People buy based on what.the.product.looks.like. (that's what-the-product-looks-like). Is this a good course? Is this worth the money? They look at the packaging- yes, I can tell from looking at this that it is a quality title. If they order on line, and receive the package, and think, oh this isn't what I expected, did I get what I paid for?, their whole experience will be affected by that impression of the package.

    Audience = Instructional, How-to's, Self Help
    How to better your golf game - go creative with die cuts, show them something enticing.
    How to lose weight, self helps- show them something they haven't seen before.
    Go creative on these types of titles. Use a die cut window, just a different shape...show them a novel approach, something they haven't thought of (and tried) already.

     
  • Prevent Returns - Proof Discs & Matchprints

    In addition to getting your title sold, you also need to keep it sold! You absolutely do not not want to deal with returns and technical issues once the client has the product.

    Test Discs- We supply a test disc with every replication project. Why, you ask? Aren't those expensive to make? Yes. Does it make the price a little higher? Yes. So why do it?. (Thanks for asking! We include them free of charge and won't leave it out to make a project initially cheaper. Couldn't we make money on having you redo the entire project . Soapbox warning... *we don't want to make our money off redo's because of technical mistakes, we'd rather help you prevent them* . ) Here's what you need to know from our experience - test discs save about 5 out of 10 projects. What we see from the manufacturing experience is that clients find problems on their test discs. Sometimes it is from a team of people working it and not everyone sees the same thing. Sometimes it is that recordables do not play the same as the glass mastered / pressed disc (different iso standard on recordable -- did you know that? They can play differently on different machines.) Sometimes it's just an error that they didn't catch on their original, but it's there. Whatever the error is, you will get to see the test disc and test it to your satisfaction.

    The same goes for printing on the disc- you need to see the art printed on the disc. A PDF on your computer is a fine place to start, but don't think that an image on your computer is the same as the physical printing on a disc. Different printing process, different medium.

    And of course you need to proof the paper printing as well. PDF on computer - does not equal, not the same - as printing on paper. You need a matchprint for color matching. You'd be surprised how many people catch typographical errors here too. And sometimes font issues. If you are doing special inks or paper stocks, you need to proof those on special press proofs. Proof, proof, proof...make absolutely certain it is correct.
