What is it?
Facebook parent Meta has teamed up with university researchers to build a giant AI model named after one of the largest animals in history, the megalodon! But why megalodon? Because the AI is a deep learning model meant to be massive in scope and a replacement for the Transformer, the architecture used in large language models (LLM). It is able to process much longer forms of text than chatbots and generate coherent and content-specific content.

Who made it?
The Megalodon AI was built by Meta, University of Southern California, Carnegie Mellon University, University of California San Diego. However, the AI is not exclusively owned and can be downloaded by anyone and trained if one has the resources. But feeding a megalodon requires a lot of data as you can imagine! How will the AI be used?
The Megalodon architecture tackles problems in transformers and can support unlimited context length (unlike chatbots) with CEMA, timestep normalization, normalized attention and a two-hop residual configuration. The Megalodon AI has the ability to work with much larger data sets than other existing AIs.

Why would a for-profit open-source an AI?
Larger tech players are taking this approach, but why? For example, OpenAI is the non-profit open-source AI while ChatGPT is the for-profit AI model from the same company. But what do they get out of making it open-source?
Artificial intelligence ethics and (soon to be laws) are rapidly evolving but one thought is that AIs are made open source in the spirit of providing collaboration and innovation. Another reason might be providing transparency.

Open-source AI defined
A new definition of open-source AI has been drafted by an influential 70-person team of researchers (the Open Source Initiative OSI), lawyers, policymakers and activists, as well as employees of Meta, Google and Amazon. It dictates that an open-source system is one made available to all without need for permission and is modifiable, sharable and studyable. It doesn’t require that developers share all their training data sets, but asks for more information than is revealed by some models that currently call themselves ‘open’.
